The team at Cardiff Airport celebrated Wear Red for Wales and Velindre Day on Friday 31st January, raising over £500 for the Airport’s Charity of the Year, Velindre Cancer Centre.
Velindre was selected as the Airport’s charity partner for 2020/21 via an airport-wide vote last year. The partnership enables Velindre and Cardiff Airport to work together on fundraising opportunities across the Airport and further afield to help raise vital funds.
Wear Red for Wales and Velindre day saw departments help to raise money by wearing red to work, a ‘guess the name of the bear’ competition, collecting passenger donations and a ‘Red-dy Steady Cook’ bake off event, judged by Owner of the Preservation Society and Velindre Ambassador, Angharad Underwood, and Cardiff Airport’s Director of Operations, Ceri Mashlan. Velindre’s mascot, Lomu the Lion, made a special visit to the Airport, surprising passengers in the Departure Lounge flying out to Edinburgh, Doha and the Caribbean.
Lisa Morgan, Chair of Cardiff Airport’s Charity Committee said, “We are really proud of the team for their fantastic support and enthusiasm on our first charity event of the year, and are delighted to have helped raise important funds for Velindre. We are already looking forward to building on this success with our next event, a charity Quiz Night on 28th February. Onwards and upwards!”
Kylie McKee, Deputy Head of Fundraising at Velindre added, “We kicked off our Wear Red For Wales And Velindre campaign at Cardiff Airport and it was fantastic to see so many staff supporting the campaign and getting into the spirit of the day. Money raised from this campaign will help us fund projects that will support children who have family members or friends living with cancer and deliver counselling and other support services to patients, families and children, so thank you to Cardiff Airport for their support and helping us make a difference.”
Cardiff Airport is committed to making a sustainable positive impact on the community through the delivery of the Touchdown Programme, which includes charity support coordinated by the Charity Committee.
