Cardiff Airport celebrates St David’s Day

A number of Welsh celebrations are taking place across Cardiff Airport today (1 March) to mark Dydd Gŵyl Dewi – St David’s Day.

The terminal will be decorated with Welsh flags and daffodils, while staff will be wearing their Welsh rugby shirts to work and Marie Curie volunteers from the local hospice will be collecting on behalf of their daffodil appeal for the hospice in nearby Penarth.

Passengers visiting Caffi Cwtch before take-off will get a free Welsh cake with any cup of coffee purchased, and the Echo Bar in departures will offer a range of Brains beers.

Our brand new Nuance tax and duty free store, which was opened by Welsh rugby referee Nigel Owens last week, stocks a variety of Welsh favourites including Penderyn, Clogau Gold and Brecon Carreg. Staff will be on hand to offer passengers little sweet treats to enjoy as they browse their way through the new walk-through store.

Children from nearby Passport to Play Day Nursery will visit to join in the celebrations all dressed up in their traditional Welsh dress before enjoying a special St David’s Day lunch back at the nursery.

Kicking off a special Disney promotion, staff will be welcoming passengers today by offering the chance to win a family break in Disnleyland Paris for Disney’s Welsh Weekend celebrations in 2017

In the arrivals hall our brand new dragon sculpture will be unveiled, his or her name will be chosen by vote on social media using #NameOurDragon.

Debra Barber, Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer at Cardiff Airport, said: “St David’s Day is a very special day for us, we’re very proud of our Welsh heritage so it’s the perfect opportunity for us to celebrate with passengers and staff.

As the national Airport for Wales, we are committed to delivering the best passenger experience and a range of destinations, offering a warm Welsh welcome to anyone who walks through our doors. There’s lots going on today, we invite customers to join in our celebrations and to fly the Welsh flag with us!”
