Toulouse The pink city

Fly from Cardiff to Toulouse with a one stop connection

Toulouse is a city full of surprises, as its cultural attractions and Romanesque architecture makes visitors wonder why this pretty French city doesn’t gain more attention. Although, this could be part of Toulouse’s charm.

Those who visit Toulouse are encouraged to wander through its picturesque pink-bricked streets, with the city’s main attractions all accessible on foot. Amongst these streets visitors will soon discover a destination of contrasts, as Toulouse’s medieval heritage is juxtaposed with references to the aerospace industry. Toulouse has played an important role in aerospace and the city happily shares its knowledge with those that want to go back to the future.

Although Toulouse is France’s fourth largest city, its compact size is bursting with sights that will leave any visitor tickled pink.

  1. Marvel at the Basilica. If you like visiting spectacular buildings then the Saint Sernin Basilica is a must-see as it is now on the UNESCO’s World Heritage list. It is also close to the city centre, just head to the Place du Capitole and you’ll find it.
  2. Fly to the moon. The Space Museum is a great place to start if you would like to learn more about Toulouse’s role in the aerospace industry. It’s located on the outskirts of the city and is great for all the family!
  3. Savour the food. If you like evenings (or even days!) filled with good food and wine then Toulouse has plenty of restaurants that’ll tantalise your taste buds. If you don’t know what to try first, a traditional cassoulet compliments a glass of wine.
  4. Go to market. For those looking to do some shopping, Toulouse has a variety of shops to satisfy any shopping addict. If you would like to grab a bargain, visit St-Sernin on a Sunday morning as there you will find a bustling flea market.
  5. Travel elsewhere. Toulouse is a fantastic location to use as a base if you would like to explore more of France. For example, Bordeaux is only two hours away by train and the medieval city of Carcassonne is only 45 minutes away.

Whilst we did not stay in Toulouse, it has a good airport, and is ideally placed to explore the South. We were impressed with Gaillac (approx half hour to the West).

The Abbaye St Michel, and Pont Michel have great views across the river Tarn, and the Maison du Vin is next door to the Abbaye (they make 7 different styles of wine in Gaillac - so there is something for everyone to like).
