Tokyo The trendsetter

Fly from Cardiff to Japan with a one stop connection

Japan is located in the North Pacific and each visit promises a unique experience, as Japan woos travellers with their eccentric, yet traditional, way of life.

Tokyo, Japan’s capital city, is the perfect blend of when old meets new, as the city places equal importance on cutting edge technology and the past that made it a reality. Visitors can travel through the city’s latest constructions to find quaint theatres performing a traditional Kabuki, or watch authentic wrestling at the National Sumo Hall. Equally there is the opportunity to become immersed in gadgets that make the mind boggle or sip on some tea in a cat café.

Discover the latest trends, savour some sushi and allow Japan to take you back to the future.

  1. People watch. In central Tokyo there are more than 12 million people so the simple activity of people watching can be easily achieved. Head to Yoyogi Park as this is a popular meeting place.
  2. Sing your heart out! You can’t visit Japan without grabbing a microphone and singing some karaoke at Smash Hits, which is one of the most popular places to join in with this activity.
  3. Jump on a train. Japan is incredibly efficient and you are able to travel from one end of the country to another via a high speed train. Look out for Tokyo’s Shibuya Station!
  4. See Mount Fuji. Speaking of the train, one of the best ways to view Mount Fuji is to hop on one and travel from Tokyo to Osaka. You should be able to see the mountain about 40 minutes into the journey.
  5. Buy some souvenirs. There are some exceptional shops all over Japan, selling everything from designer clothing to unique gifts that will astound whoever receives it! Akihabara has many electronic shops and you’ll find hipster boutiques in Harajuku.

If you get chance, book yourself into a Ryokan for the night. A traditional Japanese Inn, you’ll leave your shoes at the entrance, don a pair of Japanese slippers and a yukata (cotton kimono) and spend the night sleeping on a futon on the tatami (reed) floor

100 Yen shops are the place to go to pick up a bargain. The equivalent of our £1 shop, but they sell pretty much anything you can imagine, and are the perfect place to pick up a few Hello Kitty or Pokemon souvenirs to take home

Toilets! Yes toilets, obviously a necessity but also a must see of any visit to Japan. Japanese toilets have more buttons than a laptop … although take my advice it seems most of them squirt water in one or other direction, so press them at your peril!

Konnichiwa means ‘hello’ and don’t forget to bow; arigato means ‘thank you’ and will impress the locals and finally the all important kampai – cheers!
