Madeira An Atlantic Island Paradise

A small island of paradise located in the Atlantic Ocean just northwest of the Canary Islands, Madeira’s proximity to Africa gives it the hot summers and warm winters that make it a fantastic year round destination. Due to the steep volcanic landscape Madeira is not the ideal place for a sandy beach holiday, however if you like cuisine, wine and stunning vistas then this could be the destination for you. Adventure seekers will also love it for its hiking, climbing and water sports. Its capital, Funchal, is located on the south coast and is full of whitewashed colonial architecture as well as lush gardens that are kept fresh by the spring-like climate.

1.Take a hike. Hiking in Madeira is a must if you want to explore the island’s most beautiful areas. Discover canyons and waterfalls hidden in the forests on the ‘levada’ (narrow canyons unique to Madeira) walks. The mountain and cliff hikes provide stunning views to the Atlantic ocean.

2. Go fishing. Madeira is one of the best places to experience the thrills of deep-sea game fishing. For the keen angler, there several charters and tours operate from the island to the best fishing spots.

3. Head to the farmers’ market. Experience a slice of local life in Funchal at the morning ‘Mercado dos Lavradores’ where you can shop for fresh fish, fruit and veg. Or enjoy a coffee and ‘pasteis de nata’ (those gorgeous custard tarts) while you people-watch.

4. A dip in a pool. While Madeira doesn’t offer many opportunities to lie on sandy beaches, if you head to the north west of the island you can bathe in natural salt water swimming pools.

5. Whale watching! Madeira is one of the best locations in the world for whale and dolphin watching. You can see these magnificent creatures all year round on board one of the many guided boat tours.
