Kuala Lumpur

Whether it’s a stroll down the pristine beaches or a dive into Malaysia’s colonial past, Kuala Lumpur does not lack for amazing activities suited to every taste. The capital also offers world-class cuisine, a vibrant night scene and unparalleled opportunities for luxurious relaxation.

Kuala Lumpur is also key for the preservation of the rich and diverse Malaysian history. In the heart of the city museums dedicated to the arts and culture have been established to showcase the way the country has grown and been shaped by its people. Visitors can also experience the city’s growth by strolling through the alleys of Brickfields and Jalan Pudu, taking in the architecture and meeting local residents.

Alternatively, the stunning halls of the National Islamic Museum offer an overview of the nation’s wealthy heritage and history through a collection of jewellery, woodwork and textiles from across the Islamic world. The museum’s breath-taking Islamic architecture section features 3D models of some of the world's most important Islamic buildings, many of which can’t be seen in real life by non-Muslims.

  1. Shop until you drop. Home to some of the most illustrious shopping malls in this part of Southeast Asia, Kuala Lumpur attracts visitors with a choice of big names and home-grown boutique brands showcasing the works of Malaysian designers. Great bargains can be found in places such as Central Market, Little India and China Town.
  2. Climb the highest tower(s). Kuala Lumpur boasts some of the world’s highest towers, most notably the Petronas Twin Towers and the Kuala Lumpur Tower. Much more than just being high for height’s sake, the Petronas Towers are an architectural wonder and a world-renowned Malaysian icon, presenting the country as a force on the global scene.
  3. Ascend to the sacred caves. Kuala Lumpur also has giants amongst its natural wonders, such as the stunning Batu Caves, whose summit raises 272 steps into the sky. The caves are sacred to Hindus, with the shrine built there for giving thanks to Subramaniam, and the countless pilgrims ascending to the top make the site a human spectacle, as well as a natural one.
  4. Join the festivities. Kuala Lumpur is the setting for a number of festivals and international events throughout the year, such as Diwali – the ‘Festival of Light’, the Chinese New Year and, of course, the biggest and most vibrant celebration in the country - the Colours of Malaysia. The festival takes place in May and showcases the best Malaysian food, entertainment, art and culture.
  5. Take a walk on the ‘wild’ side. Animal lovers will be impressed with the large selection of local fauna in Kuala Lumpur’s National Zoo and Aquaria KLCC, showcasing the diverse range of exotic creatures found in the country. Lake Gardens, in particular, offers an unforgettable experience with butterfly, deer and bird parks scattered amid lawns, lakes and the beautiful orchid garden.
