Amsterdam The little big city

Direct flights from Cardiff to Amsterdam

If you are looking to party the night away or enjoy a cultural city break, you'll find everything you need in this canal-side city.

There are 165 canals carving their way through the city and this provides a unique way to experience an exciting tourist destination. Away from the water you'll find tree-lined streets full of culture, including world-class museums and stunning architecture, which you can explore on foot or by bike. Cycling is incredibly popular in the city; there are more bikes than inhabitants!

Amsterdam is the largest city in the Netherlands and has more visitor attractions close to the city centre than any other destination in the world. This makes Amsterdam the perfect little big city.

  1. View the city from the water! If you arrive in Amsterdam and want to be introduced to its top attractions you need to book a place on a canal excursion. There are also many departure points so you can jump off whenever you wish.
  2. Relax on the beach! Surprisingly you won't need to leave the city centre for sandy feet! Head for Strand West, one of Amsterdam's permanent urban beaches, which even has hammocks and beach volleyball!
  3. Enjoy some traditional Dutch cuisine. You can't leave the city without trying some of their simple hearty food, enjoy some heart-warming pea soup or slowly braised meat.
  4. Soak up the culture! Amsterdam is packed full of museums but the Rijksmuseum is must-see, it was renovated in 2013 and houses an extensive collection of historic art.
  5. Discover vintage. There are more than 6,000 shops in Amsterdam with a growing vintage shopping community. Head for the 9 Street District to grab yourself a fashionable piece of history.

Make sure that you rent a bike, visit the parks, walk along the canals and see Ann Frank’s house.

Amsterdam is a creative city, with a real passion for art. There are many boutique galleries to be found throughout the city that can appear as just shop fronts on first glance, but look further as there are many hidden art spaces to be found in and around the city

It is 'touristy' but a canal boat ride is a really nice way to see the city. The architecture in Amsterdam is unique and really interesting, each building is different, so a boat ride is the best way to take it all in.
